This sitar is beautifully handcrafted by one of the finest makers; truly a mixed media form of art, it is made of wood, gourd, and metal. The instrument is played by the fingers with the help of frets and plucked with mizrafs. To help with resonance and a multi-dimentional sound, sympathetic strings envelope the bottom of the main Sitar strings. Sitar players create iconic "meends" or linked notes, by pulling the main string to create tonal changes.
There are many different genres of Sitars. The type of wood used can greatly alter the sound of the instrument and thus the style. Varying types of Sitar have been made popular by renowned musicians such as: Vailayat Khan, Nikhil Banerjee, Ravi Shankar and many others. This particular Sitar is regarded as a "Ravi Shankar Style" Sitar.
